anja harms, aus dem Kalevala: krähe bring mir meine tränen

»BRING, O RAVEN, BRING MY TEAR-DROPS«.
THREE CANTOS FROM THE KALEVALA.

One storyline in the »Kalevala«, the Finnish national epic compiled by Elias Lönnrot, is the creation of the kantele. The old magician and singer Väinämöinen manufactures it out of the jawbone of a giant pike. No one succeeds in playing it. Only when Väinämöinen himself takes hold of the instrument do all living things come together, overcome by the beauty of the music of the kantele. Even Väinämöinen weeps; his tears drop as blue pearls down to the bottom of the sea. When the kantele is lost at sea in a storm Väinämöinen carves a new instrument out of birchwood.
The book contains the full text of cantos 40, 41 and 44 of the Kalevala. A concertina printed on both sides brings the cantos together in three sections. Animals, ships, the moon, the birch tree – everything »floats« on the sea of words.
